Internship Program

The internship program at Programs For People, Inc., has been in existence for over 35 years. During that time, hundreds of students have received training with us from a variety of professional disciplines including:

  • Social Work

  • Counseling Psychology

  • Occupational Therapy

  • Rehabilitation Counseling

Students interning at Programs for People, Inc., apply what they learn in the classroom to real-life practice with individuals, families, groups, and larger systems. They will get real experience in their field of study, while earning classroom credit.

  • • Students must be enrolled in an accredited program of professional graduate study, such as social work or counseling psychology

    • Students must be available three days a week (twenty-four hours per week) during the academic year

    • Students who are interested in our internship program, please email inquiry@programsforpeople.org to request more information and indicate the type of internship they are seeking (i.e. occupational or behavior therapy, etc.)

  • • Student interns will receive a minimum of one and a half hours per week of supervision from a qualified supervisor and participate in weekly clinical reviews of clients in a team meeting

    • Interns will have the ability to consult with the team’s psychiatrist on an as-needed basis

    • While interning, students will achieve competence in a wide range of roles including, formulate assessments and treatment plans, direct clinical practice, collaborate with the multidisciplinary staff and community providers, and work on case management and advocacy

    • Interns will also learn the policies and issues that affect services to clients, with the opportunity to learn about organizational dynamics and change.

    • There will be plenty of supervisory input through clinical reviews, the organization’s consulting psychiatrist, and in-service education sessions. Supervisors meet with representatives twice a year to coordinate training and can contact them as they need throughout the year. Each institution carries professional liability insurance for its students.

  • The goal of the internship is to:

    1. Produce professional clinicians with the skills and knowledge to work with a wide range of clients

    2. Analyze and apply theory critically

    3. Utilize a variety of interventions according to client needs

This internship program provides students with a great opportunity to help clients improve their psychological and social functioning, and provide many helpful resources along the way. The student interns become an integral part of Programs For People, Inc. They make significant contributions to the multidisciplinary treatment team and participate actively in facilitating many groups and individuals. Numerous academic institutions have participated in this program including:

  • Simmons College
